Neighborhood Health Series: March Madness: Allergic Diseases on the Offense

Allergic diseases are common and 20-30% of the population experience some form of allergy, which imposes a physical and economic burden often compromising productivity and quality of life. The prevalence of allergic diseases in the Western world has increased and so has asthma in children. Scientifically, allergy refers to unwanted and overt immunological responses to foreign antigens that may include inhaled, food, contact and sting -mediated exposure to these antigens or allergens. We will discuss 1) how allergy is triggered, 2) detection of allergy, and 3) available treatment options for an allergic patient. Attempts will be made to discuss prevalent local allergens in the Las Vegas valley.
