Roseman University Dental Clinic Opens Today

February 12, 2013

The Dental Clinic at Roseman University opens today, offering affordable dental care for people in and around the Salt Lake valley. Students in the Doctor of Dental Medicine (DMD) program at Roseman University will begin seeing patients as part of their curriculum to become dental professionals.

The clinic will provide basic oral health care at a fraction of the usual fees charged for dental procedures. While prices vary by procedure, fees for services will be approximately 50 to 70 percent lower than the average cost.

Anyone interested in becoming a patient in the Dental Clinic at Roseman University can schedule a no-cost consultation and screening appointment by calling 801-878-1200 or visit www.rosemandental.com for more information. Licensed Utah dentist faculty members will conduct the screenings.

Students will see their first patients on beginning at 1 p.m. Their academic schedule through August will include two half days per week in the clinic, on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 1 p.m. to 5 p.m.

“A critical component of the DMD curriculum is the opportunity for students to treat patients under the direct supervision of Utah-licensed dentists,” said Dr. Victor Sandoval, Associate Dean for Academic Affairs. “This enables them to make supervised clinical decisions and begin to deliver comprehensive dental care to patients of all ages and backgrounds.”

The Dental Clinic at Roseman University will offer a wide array of dental care and patient services. Initially since DMD students are only in their second year of a four-year program, they will conduct basic treatment and preventive procedures, such as cleanings and simple restorations, while faculty provide more comprehensive care for patients. Students will not provide more advanced treatments until they reach the third year of the DMD program, in August.

In addition to teaching basic patient care techniques, the goal of the clinic is to prepare students to become competent, compassionate oral health caregivers.

“One of the unique characteristics of our students is that not only are they academically gifted, but they have a sincere desire to do what is best for their patients, for their communities, and for their colleagues,” said Dr. Llewellyn Powell, Director of Primary Dental Care. “During their time in the Dental Clinic, we want to continue to foster their talents as an unselfish and highly ethical group of young men and women.”

The Dental Clinic at Roseman University also offers Urgent Care services for individuals who have emergency dental care needs. Treatment in the Urgent Care Clinic is provided by licensed dentist faculty members.
