President’s Letter – March 2022

March 16, 2022

The spring season is upon us, which means hooding and commencement ceremonies are fast-approaching. It’s an exciting time a year as so many Roseman University students near completion of their education and prepare to enter the healthcare workforce. I know many students experience some of anxiety as they wrap up their final blocks and assessments and prepare for their licensure examinations, but they have much to look forward to as they prepare to begin their new and rewarding careers.

It’s also time for our annual Research Symposium. In its eighth year, the event brings together student, resident, and post-grad researchers from Roseman’s Colleges of Pharmacy, Nursing, Dental Medicine, Medicine and Graduate Studies, as well as from other institutions from across the country, to showcase their best educational, bench, translational and clinical research. The scope of research presented each year is impressive. This year’s event will also welcome Annette Fleckenstein, MS, PhD of University of Utah as the keynote speaker. She will present “Psychostimulant-induced Alterations in Monoaminergic Transporters: Implications for Neurotoxicity and Neuroprotection.” I invite everyone to join us for the event on Wednesday, March 30 from 3:00 to 6:30 pm at both the Henderson and South Jordan campuses. Information can be found at https://research.roseman.edu/symposium/.

The annual Research Symposium is a wonderful way to demonstrate Roseman’s research capabilities. Many projects are conducted in collaboration with institutions from all over the world, bringing together researchers with different perspectives. Further strengthening Roseman University’s international reputation, the College of Graduate Studies was invited to join the Nevada Trade and Education Mission to the United Arab Emirates earlier this month. The mission was organized by the Nevada Governor’s Office of Economic Development (GOED) and was funded in part by a cooperative agreement with the US Department of Commerce and the US Small Business Administration. Roseman was one of two universities representing Nevada’s academic interests in the Middle East. The Roseman team included Dr. Jeffery Talbot, Vice President for Research and Dean of the College of Graduate Studies, Dr. Casey Sayre and Dr. Kamran Awan. Drs. Sayre and Awan serve as Program Directors of Master of Science graduate programs in pharmaceutical sciences and biomedical sciences, respectively and represented Roseman’s College of Pharmacy and College of Dental Medicine. As members of the Nevada delegation, they were joined by 15 Nevada businesses and directors of international trade and international business from GOED.

The Nevada delegation participated in the Trade Winds Business Forum, a meeting sponsored by the US Department of Commerce and US Commercial Service to foster cooperation and collaboration between business and education leaders from the US with representatives from more than 20 countries across the Middle East, North Africa, and Sub-Saharan Africa. Roseman also joined Nevada delegates in attending the 2020 World Expo in Dubai, UAE, visiting the USA pavilion and being hosted by trade and education representatives from Serbia and Slovenia.

During their time in the UAE, Drs. Talbot, Sayre, and Awan met with leaders from more than a dozen government, academic, and research institutions from the Abu Dhabi, Dubai, Ras Al Khaimah, and Sharja emirates, including the UAE Embassy, Abu Dhabi Ministry of Education, Abu Dhabi University, American University of Sharja, Sharja Research and Technology and Innovation Park, Khalifa University, RAK Medical and Health Sciences University, Fatima College of Health Sciences, and the Modul University of Dubai.

I’d like to thank to Drs. Talbot, Sayre and Awan for their outstanding work representing Roseman University on the other side of the globe and introducing the University to new and exciting institutions and organizations on the international stage. I look foward to seeing new collaborations developed from the opportunity.

Best Wishes,

Renee Coffman, PhD
