Allergic diseases are common, with 20-30% of the population experiencing some form of allergies, imposing a physical and economic burden often compromising productivity and quality of life. The prevalence of allergic diseases in the Western world has increased as has asthma in children. Scientifically, allergy refers to unwanted and overt immunological responses to foreign antigens that may include inhaled, food, contact and sting-mediated exposure to these antigens or allergens. We will discuss 1) how allergy is triggered, 2) detection of allergy and 3) available treatment options for an allergic patient. We will also discuss prevalent local allergens in the Las Vegas valley and why allergic diseases seem to be rising in local populations.
