Opioids—either prescription medications or an illicit drug—present one of the most serious drug crisis the US has ever experienced.  In the late 1990s, increased prescription of opioid medications led to widespread misuse of both prescription and non-prescription opioids as the addictive potential of these medications became clear. In 2017 HHS declared a public health emergency.
