Hero Scholar: Sara Melese

As the daughter of Ethiopian immigrants who watched her father sacrifice his education to support their family after her mother’s illness, Sara Melese understands intimately how structural barriers limit opportunity. That understanding has fueled her commitment to Georgetown’s DC Schools Project, where she tutored adult learners like Kathleen, an immigrant preparing for her citizenship exam, developing individualized study strategies that helped Kathleen build both retention and confidence.

Her academic and research achievements are extensive. Sara served as Deputy Director of Student Health Policy for Georgetown’s Student Association, translating survey data into evidence-based wellness policy recommendations, while conducting research across multiple labs including the Visual Perception and Plasticity Lab at Georgetown University Medical Center. A published researcher and Sigma Xi member, she has also used her fluency in Amharic to expand outreach for the DC Schools Project, connecting Ethiopian families with educational resources.

Now pursuing a Doctor of Pharmacy at Roseman University’s Henderson campus, Sara brings a rare combination of research rigor, policy experience, and a deeply personal commitment to equitable access. The Hero Scholarship, funded by Valley Hospital and Christina Beltran-Bitner, will support her mission to become a pharmacist who ensures care delivery is guided by data, equity, and compassionate engagement.
