Roseman University College of Dental Medicine Dr. Karthikeyan Subramani Awarded AAOF Biomedical Research Award

September 13, 2021

We are happy to share that Roseman University College of Dental Medicine’s Dr. Karthikeyan Subramani, BDS, MSC, MS, was recently awarded the Biomedical Research Award from the American Association of Orthodontists Foundation.

According to the organization’s Web site, the “mission of the AAOF is to advance the orthodontic specialty by supporting quality education and research that leads to excellence in patient care, and by promoting orthodontic charitable giving.”

“I’m honored to be the recipient of the Biomedical Research Award from the AAOF this year,” Subramani shares.

His background centers on the detection, diagnosis, and treatment of white, spot lesions (WSLs), difficult to detect and diagnose due to the proximity to gingival tissue and bracket pads, which impedes visual and tactile inspection of the enamel.

“Orthodontic patients with poor oral hygiene tend to exhibit plaque buildup around brackets. This often results in enamel demineralization and the development of white, spot lesions.”

The aim of his research study is to fabricate nanoparticles of a naturally occurring dietary compound and evaluate the remineralization potential of such novel nanoparticles on artificial WSLs on extracted human teeth.

We join in the celebration of this wonderful achievement Dr. Subramani and look forward to your findings.
